They generally share with each other a common culture, but with some regional variation, and they speak dialects of a common Austronesian language-Malay. They constitute about half of the country’s total population, they are politically the most powerful group, and, on the peninsula, they are numerically dominant. The Malays originated in different parts of the peninsula and archipelagic Southeast Asia.
